Chad Carver, Palmer Carver's older brother, was always the caregiver. When they were kids, they had an unspoken agreement that Palmer would dreamily walk into traffic and Chad would be there to pull him back at the last moment. When their parents died in a car crash when they were teenagers, Chad got a job to take care of himself and Palmer until Palmer ran away from home, without a word, after he turned sixteen. He joined the Air Force and when he got out, he married his high school sweetheart, Jenny Marshall, and got a job as a mental health orderly at Mercer Country Psychiatric Hospital near Trenton, New Jersey, about a half-hour drive from his hometown of Riverdale.

Chad has a strong need to take care of those around him, constantly living his life for others rather than himself. His first taste of choice and freedom becomes his first introduction to serious paranoia as his wife leaves him for another man--Chad doesn't know who this man is, so it could be anybody, while in his imaginings, it's everybody. This is when Palmer shows up after his long disappearance with a wild story about a grand conspiracy, drawing Chad to the brink of PARANOIA, plunging him into a dark alternate world where secret societies war over the earth.
